“Kitchen Fire Extinguished
Spokane Valley, Wash. – Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) units responded this morning to a report of a structure fire in the 1500 Block of North University. A total of 10 apparatus and support vehicles responded.
The first SVFD unit on the scene observed light smoke coming from the home. Firefighters quickly extinguished the small fire in the kitchen, limiting fire damage to the stove and cabinets above the stove and preventing further fire damage to the home. There was smoke damage throughout the home. One resident was evacuated and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Two elderly dogs were also removed from harm and are being cared for by Spokanimal.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire damage to the kitchen, and smoke damage to the remainder of the home, is estimated at $25,000. With a rapid and efficient attack, firefighters were able to save an estimated at worth over $192,000. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Department provided traffic control allowing firefighters to operate safely, and the American Red Cross is assisting the residents.
The Spokane Valley Fire Department would like to remind residents to be sure to change the batteries at least twice a year (when the clocks change) and replace smoke detectors that are more than 10 years old.”
