Update: SIRR Team Investigating May 2nd Officer Involved Shooting

The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team (SIRR) is investigating the Spokane Police Officer involved shooting that occurred May 2, 2016, at the West Wynn Motel located at 2701 West Sunset Boulevard.

The incident began at approximately 2:30 p.m. when a male identifying himself as Aaron D. Johnson called and reported his roommate hit him in the face.  The male refused to answer additional questions, stated he was paranoid his roommate would return and hung up.

Dispatch informed responding officers, after conducting a computer check of Aaron D. Johnson’s name, that Johnson had an active misdemeanor warrant for his arrest,  was a convicted felon, and a previously violent offender.

A second call was received by the same male who stated the roommate was threatening to kill him with a knife and hung up again.  Dispatch called him back asking for additional information but the male said he had to go because he thought his roommate was coming to get him.

A third call was received by the complainant stating someone was trying to kill him with a gun.  The male said his roommate would be back any minute, he didn’t want to be seen on the phone, and hung up.

When officers arrived, they contacted a male at the location and shortly after that, officers advised shots were fired.  SIRR Investigators learned the male told responding officers he had a gun.  While later processing the scene for evidence, SIRR Investigators recovered a firearm that upon closer inspection was determined to be a replica.

The male, later identified as 32-year-old Aaron D. Johnson, was taken into custody and medical aid was immediately provided.  Johnson was transported to a local hospital for his injuries.

No citizens or officers were injured during this incident.

Johnson is listed in stable condition and faces charges of Assault 3rd Degree.

This is an active and ongoing investigation and additional charges are possible. SIRR detectives and Spokane County Forensic Unit Technicians will continue to process evidence, review officer body camera video, interview witnesses and interview the officers involved with this incident.

Investigators are asking for anyone who witnessed this incident to call Crime Check at 509-456-2233.
