Major Crimes Detectives Investigating Shooting in North Spokane County

Major Crimes Detectives are investigating a shooting that occurred late last night in North Spokane County.  Initial information gathered at the scene indicates it began as a domestic violence incident between a husband and wife which escalated to an attempted murder and apparent suicide.

On September 26, 2017 at approximately 10:00 p.m. Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a shooting behind Miller’s One Stop located at 39824 North Newport Highway (Hwy. 2) in Elk, WA.

The caller reported hearing gunshots behind the store and an adult male was shot and possibly deceased.

Spokane County Fire District 4 and Deer Park Ambulance personnel arrived and began life-saving efforts to the male, who was still breathing.  Arriving deputies secured the scene to preserve evidence for Major Crimes Detectives who were called to continue the investigation.

Life Flight was requested and, with the assistance of Washington State Patrol, the Newport Hwy. was closed for a short time to allow Life Flight to safely land.  Life Flight transported the male to a local hospital for treatment where he was later pronounced deceased.

Initial information indicates this was a domestic violence incident that escalated to the male shooting at an adult female as she fled the scene in a vehicle before turning the firearm on himself.  The uninjured female victim has been contacted and is safe.

Detectives continue to investigate to determine the facts of this incident but do not believe anyone else was involved or any associated danger to the community exists.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the deceased, as well as the cause and manner of death, when appropriate to do so.

Detectives urge anyone who has information regarding this incident and has not been contacted by investigators to call Crime Check at 509-456-2233, reference #10130157.
