800 West Walton Homicide Update

Marquis R. Smith (41) was taken into custody this morning following the domestic violence homicide on Walton Ave. Major Crimes detectives worked overnight and developed probable cause to arrest Smith for the murder of his mother. Detectives were granted a Murder 1st degree warrant. Smith was located and arrested.

This morning, around 9:45am, a patrol officer contacted a suspicious person at Wall St. and Greta Ave. Officer Yrigollen contacted Marquis Smith and told him to remove his hands from his pocket. Smith complied and was taken into custody without incident. SPD dispatchers confirmed the outstanding warrant for Smith and he was arrested. Smith was taken to the Major Crimes office before being booked into jail for Murder 1st degree domestic violence.

SPD investigating DV stabbing incident in Garland District

On 12-17-18 shortly before 11:30PM, SPD received a 911 call of a possible stabbing in the 800 block of W Walton Ave. SPD Officers arrived on scene in approximately two minutes and quickly located an adult female suffering from apparent stab wounds. Officers began administering first aid, and the victim was subsequently transported to a local hospital. Despite the life-saving efforts of Officers, SFD and AMR Medics, and hospital personnel, the victim did succumb to her injuries. The identity of the victim will be released by the Spokane County Medical Examinerā€™s office.

SPD Major Crimes Unit detectives are on scene. The investigation is in the preliminary stages, and therefore there is limited suspect information to release at this time. At the writing of this release no arrests have been made. The suspect and victim are believed to be known to each other, and this does not appear to be a random attack. More information will be released as the investigation progresses.

The 800 block of W Walton is currently closed, and will remain so for several hours.
