Spokane Police Major Crimes Collision Investigators are on the scene of a fatality crash at the intersection of Division and Providence. One adult male bicyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene. Division southbound from Garland to Bridgeport will be closed while investigators continue to process evidence.

This evening, August 8, 2018, just before 6:00pm, Spokane Police responded to the report of a vehicle versus bicycle crash at the intersection of Division St. and Providence Ave. Witnesses state the male bicyclist was crossing Division westbound when he was hit by a vehicle in the center southbound lane of Division. It’s illegal for both pedestrians and vehicles to cross Division at this intersection; clearly marked by both signage for pedestrians and a median to block vehicular traffic. It appears he was riding a motorized bicycle and was not wearing a helmet.
Off duty personnel including a Spokane Police Officer, Spokane Police Detective, AMR Medic, registered nurse and a doctor from Deaconess Hospital stopped immediately to render medical aid. Despite all their efforts, the male succumbed to his injuries on scene.
Investigators are still processing the scene and anticipate having southbound Division closed for the next hour or so; until approximately 9:30pm. Please use Addison or Post as your southbound alternative routes. The driver of the vehicle has been completely cooperative and at this time, neither speed or intoxication appear to be factors in the crash.
This is an important reminder for ALL traffic; pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists alike, to pay close attention to signage and obey traffic laws. Pedestrians and bicyclists utilizing pedestrian crosswalks and sidewalks, may not leave a curb suddenly and, if not crossing at a crosswalk, pedestrians must yield to traffic. For motorists, take the extra time to drive safely and without distraction. Speeding, failing to yield, and running red lights or stop signs are some of the most common errors drivers make that lead to collisions with pedestrians and bicyclists.
