Firefighters Extinguish Mirabeau Point Park Wildfire

Spokane Valley, Wash. – The Spokane Valley Fire Department responded at 2:59 PM for a smoke investigation in the Mirabeau Point Park area of Spokane Valley. Responding firefighters on Rescue 8 and Ladder 8 upgraded the response to a brush fire, bringing in additional fire engines from SVFD, Fire District 8, and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) including 2 Fire Boss airplanes.

Firefighters were able to access the initially 1 acre fire on foot and with smaller pickup truck sized fire engines to begin attacking the fire. As both wind and terrain began pushing the fire north, 2 Fire Boss planes from DNR began making water drops from above and refilling from Newman Lake. An effort of multiple airplane water drops and firefighters on the ground were able to get the main 5 acre fire and 1 small spot fire completely contained in approximately 2 hours, with firefighters remaining on scene several hours afterwards to extinguish hotspots.

The fire cause is under investigation. No evacuations were issued, no known structures were damaged, and no firefighters were injured at the time of press release. Assistance on the fire was provided by Spokane County Fire District 8 and the Department of Natural Resources. Due to a simultaneous house fire approximately 1 mile away, additional assistance backfilling Spokane Valley fire stations and responding to emergencies was provided by Spokane County Fire District 8, Spokane County Fire District 9, and the Spokane Fire Department. A total of 14 fire engines and command vehicles responded to the fire.
