Firefighters completed mop up operations today and the fire is now 100% contained.  Crews are now in the process of demobilizing from the Malden Fire. The Northeast Washington Interagency Incident Management Team (NEWIIMT) would like to thank the community for its tremendous support of the firefighters during the incident.  “The local firefighters and farmers did an amazing job during the initial response to this incident and really set the stage for our incoming firefighter’s success,” said NEWIIMT Incident Commander Ed Lewis.

The Malden Fire started on August 2, 2017, at approximately 3:40 pm, just north of Malden, WA.  Firefighters from Whitman County Fire District 7 as well as firefighters from surrounding jurisdictions responded to the quick moving fire in standing wheat.  The fire quickly spread in light flashy fuels and moved into some adjacent timber where crews did a great job overnight keeping it in check.  The fire did threaten homes in the nearby town of Malden and level 2 evacuation orders were in place.  All evacuation orders have since been rescinded.
