Firefighters Contain Brush Fire near Mirabeau Park
Spokane Valley, Wash. – Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) units responded to a reported brush fire burning just north of the Granite Point Apartments in the 12900 block of E. Mansfield Ave shortly before 10:30 am today. A smoke column was visible to arriving crews, along with heavy smoke in the trees inside a fenced natural area just west of Mirabeau Park. The fire was generally burning in low brush in sloped, rocky terrain.
Spokane Valley Fire Department units worked closely with crews from Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Spokane Fire Department and Spokane County Fire District 8 to establish a containment line around the fire just before 12:00 pm. Although temperatures were hot with low humidity, winds were relatively calm which helped firefighting efforts.
A total of 15 fire apparatus and support vehicles responded to the fire. Aerial water support was dispatched but diverted en route to another brush fire burning near Cheney. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Department assisted with clearing civilians out of the natural area near the brush fire, as well as traffic control.
One firefighter was treated for heat-related illness and transported to the local emergency room for evaluation. No structures were damaged or lost in the fire and no evacuations took place. The fire burned 2-3 acres in the natural area. The cause of the fire is under investigation by DNR.
Spokane Valley Fire Department is asking residents to exercise extreme caution with fire, especially as hot, dry, windy weather conditions set in for the upcoming week. SVFD also reminds residents that fireworks are illegal in Spokane County.
