SIRR Team Investigating August 3, 2018 Officer Involved Shooting Incident in North Spokane County
The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team (SIRR) is investigating the Officer Involved Shooting involving a Spokane County Deputy on August 3 in North Spokane County.
On August 3, 2018, at approximately 4:20 p.m., Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 37000 block of North Sherman Rd. in Deer Park for a report of a male (later identified by the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office as Josh A. Martin) involved in a single vehicle collision who was agitated and armed with a gun. Responding Deputies received additional information Martin had hit mailboxes with his vehicle, appeared intoxicated and held a gun to his head stating he wanted to kill himself.
The first Deputy arrived on scene within minutes, contacted Martin and attempted to deescalate the incident. Moments later, Martin produced a handgun and brought it up towards the area of the Deputy. The Deputy fired his service weapon striking Martin.
The Deputy requested immediate medical response and began lifesaving medical attention. Martin was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Officer Involved Protocol was enacted and SIRR Team investigators responded to conduct the investigation and process the scene for evidence. SIRR investigators recovered a loaded handgun near Martin’s body.
The involved Deputy was placed on administrative leave as per the policy of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
The SIRR Team is comprised of multiple agencies in eastern Washington, including the Spokane Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Stevens County Sheriff’s Office, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and the Spokane Valley Police Department.
- The Spokane Police Department is the case managing agency in this incident. All future communications regarding this investigation will be sent via the SIRR Team.
- The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office will release the name of the deputy involved in the incident at a later time.
- Once the SIRR Team investigation is complete the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
