Extrication Response After Head On With Valley Engine 1

Spokane Valley, Wash. – Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) units responded with a full extrication response (five apparatus and three command officers) after a car struck Valley Engine 1 just after 3:49 AM this morning. The incident took place on North University Road between Mission and Maxwell Roads.

Valley Engine 1 was returning to the station from a previous incident and was traveling south bound on University when it was struck on the front driver side of the engine by a car traveling north bound. Engine 1 was occupied by 4 firefighters at the time of the accident. The firefighter’s verbally confirmed everyone inside of Engine 1 was not injured and quickly exited the engine to evaluate the other vehicle and its occupants.

Upon confirmation of the number of patients in that vehicle and that the adult aged male was trapped inside with serious injuries, the officer on Engine 1 immediately called on the radio for a extrication response to the location of the accident. Engine 1 personal then proceeded to; initiate patient care on the trapped patient, pull a protection hose line for the vehicle, and stabilize the vehicle in preparation for the extrication unit’s arrival.

Extrication units quickly arrived on scene and proceeded to cut the vehicle from around the patient and safely remove him. The patient was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department. Expect University between Mission and Maxwell to be closed for an unknown amount of time this morning as investigators are on scene processing the accident scene.

Spokane Valley Fire Department would like to remind drivers to slow down during adverse weather conditions.

Head-on Collision Investigation on University Road

University Road, between Mission and Maxwell was closed for several hours while Spokane Valley Traffic Collision Investigators process the scene of a serious injury head-on collision. 

This morning prior to 4:00 a.m., the driver of a northbound passenger vehicle on University Road crossed over the centerline and struck a southbound Spokane Valley Fire Department truck, head-on.

The uninjured firefighters immediately turned their attention to the welfare of the driver who had to be extricated.

Spokane Valley Deputies responded to the scene to assist and begin the investigation.  Due to the serious, possibly life-threatening injuries, Traffic Collision Investigators also responded.

SIRT Team Volunteers responded to assist with traffic control while the portion of University was closed for several hours.

Investigators believe impairment and speed are possible factors of this collision.
