The Spokane Investigative Regional Response (SIRR) Team is investigating a Spokane Police Department (SPD) officer-involved shooting that occurred just after 12:30 p.m., on November 7th, 2015, in a parking lot near the intersection of Division and Cataldo.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Tyler J. Randant, faces several counts of Attempted Robbery and Assault.  Due to the large number of potential victims and witnesses, additional charges are expected.

Investigators ask anyone who has not already been contacted by law enforcement and had contact with Randant earlier in the day, witnessed this incident or took video of this incident to call Crime Check at 509-456-2233 and reference #392381.

The incident began when a citizen reported Randant was standing in the middle of Division, attempting to stop vehicles and open car doors.  Prior to walking into traffic, Randant reportedly tried to take a victim’s keys in the parking lot of a local restaurant.  The caller believed Randant may be high or intoxicated, may be armed with a knife and was last seen walking northbound in traffic on Division.

Several calls were received stating Randant was trying to kick and hit vehicles as he continued to obstruct traffic.  Additional calls were received stating Randant had a knife in his hand and was attempting to enter citizen’s vehicles.

When Spokane Police Officers arrived, they confronted Randant who was holding a knife to his own throat.  Randant ran into the Zip Trip parking lot and behind an occupied SUV as the Officers continued to order Randant to drop the knife.  Randant failed to follow the commands and two officers fired shots striking Randant.

Officers immediately provided medical aid.

Randant was transported to a local hospital where he is currently listed in stable condition.

No other citizens or officers were injured during this incident.

One of the Spokane Police Officers involved in this incident was wearing a body camera.

This continues to be an active and ongoing investigation. SIRR detectives and Spokane County Forensic Unit Technicians will continue to process evidence, interview witnesses and interview the officers involved with this incident.

The SIRR Team is comprised of multiple agencies in Eastern Washington, including the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol, Spokane Police Department, and Airway Heights Police Department.

• The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is the managing agency in this incident and all future release of information regarding this incident will be sent via the SIRR Team.

• The Spokane Police Department will release the name of the officers involved in this incident.

• Once the SIRR Team investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
