Spokane Police took a man into custody after a standoff that lasted over two hours today. The call started as a shooting call where a male reportedly told a witness to get inside; then the witness heard a gunshot. After receiving the first call, SPD received an additional calls reporting more gunshots heard in the area. The first officers arriving on scene also being fired on as they approached. After refusing to come out, Daryl M. Dalebout (55) exited the house holding a weapon and was taken into custody. After being treated at an area hospital for injuries sustained while resisting arrest, he’ll be booked into jail for several felonies.

Just after 3:00pm today, August 26, 2016, the Spokane Police Department responded to the report of a shots fired in the 1100 block of west Frederick. A witness called in and reported a male at a house in the neighborhood had told him told him to get inside; the witness then heard a gunshot. More gunshots were heard coming from the house. As the first officers arrived, they reported the suspect had fired at them as they approached the scene. The male, later identified as Dalebout, made a number of suicidal and homicidal threats during the standoff. At one point he’d threatened to start the house on fire, at another point he’d made reference to a gun in a vehicle outside or possibly coming outside with a gun to confront officers.

Resources from the Hostage Negotiation Team, SWAT, K9, the Explosives Disposal Unit and Spokane Fire Department’s Rescue Task Force were called in an effort to bring this situation to a peaceful resolution. After nearly three hours of attempting to negotiate with Dalebout, he exited the home holding a sword. Because he had made threats and was armed as he exited the home, multi-force options were in place. Less lethal rounds were utilized almost simultaneously to a K9 deployment. Dalebout did sustain injuries related to both deployments, but is expected to be treated and released from the hospital. He will then be booked into Spokane County Jail for five (5) counts of First Degree Assault.

A search warrant was obtained for the home and the Major Crimes Unit will continue to investigate in order to determine if additional charges may be pursued. This incident was a prime example of utilizing department resources and other agency partnerships to try and ensure the wellbeing of not only our community, but the suspect’s safety as well.
