SWAT Team Member Shot During Standoff with Armed Barricaded DV Suspect Â
A Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant and a SWAT Team Leader was shot last night while attempting to get a barricaded, armed domestic violence suspect to surrender. The Sergeant was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a serious but non-life-threatening wound and is expected to recover.  The suspect was later located deceased inside the residence.   Â
On March 6, 2017, at approximately 7:15 p.m., a domestic violence call was reported at a residence located in the 18700 block of North Leslie Ln. in North Spokane County.
The initial information provided by the caller stated the suspect had assaulted the victim and her daughter the day before and there was an ongoing history of domestic violence to include threats to kill the victim and members of her family. It was also reported the suspect had just crashed his vehicle into a vehicle occupied by the victim, the victim’s daughter and her mother at the residence.
With previous information the suspect had been armed, necessitating the need to call SWAT and Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT) members to the residence twice in the past, coupled with reports the suspect still had access to firearms, several deputies were dispatched to the residence.
Once at the scene, deputies made contact with the victims and attempted to call the suspect out of the residence. After several minutes, the suspect exited the residence and began yelling at the deputies and appeared very agitated. Continued calls for the suspect to surrender were unsuccessful and he went back in the house.
SWAT and HNT were called to the scene while a search warrant was requested. PA announcements for the suspect to surrender peacefully, including additional announcements SWAT had arrived, continued but the suspect did not comply.
At one point, the suspect was observed at the rear of the residence. He was ordered to show his hands and a less lethal round was deployed, but not effective. The suspect retreated into the residence, retrieved a weapon and began to fire at deputies, who returned fire.
The Sergeant advised he had been shot and deputies immediately began to assess and treat the gunshot wound. He was moved to a waiting ambulance and quickly transported to a hospital for treatment.
A robot was used to enter the residence and located the suspect, deceased, inside.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the deceased and cause and manner of death at a later time.
The Officer Involved Protocol was enacted and the scene secured. The SIRR Team responded and is on-scene investigating the incident with the assistance of the Forensic Unit.
The SIRR Team is comprised of multiple agencies in Eastern Washington, including the Spokane Police Department, the Washington State Patrol and the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
• The Spokane Police Department is the managing agency in this incident. All future communications on this incident will be sent via the SIRR Team.
• The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office will release the name of the wounded Sergeant and deputies involved in this incident at a later time. when appropriate.
• Once the SIRR Team investigation is complete the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
